Have a tea party for Derby Day!

Arguably the United States’ most famous horse race, the historic Kentucky Derby includes some Bay Area representatives this year: jockeys Victor Espinoza who’ll ride Midnight Interlude,  and Patrick Valenzuela who’ll ride Comma to the Top.  Since the traditional Derby Day festivities include tea sandwiches and sweet tea on the menu – along with mint juleps – why not go with the theme and have a tea party? Bring out your most fabulous hats, or your most cheerful suits, turn on the television, enjoy the day while you watch.  Here are some menu and recipe suggestions:

Sweet Tea
Iced Tea
Mint Tisane
Mint Tea Punch
Kentucky Julep Tea

Basil-Lemon Scones
Clotted Cream with Flower Confetti

Brown Sugar Cream Cheese on toast
Sweet Potato Hash
Chicken Salad Tea Sandwiches
Chicken and Peach Sliders
Mini Reuben Tea Sandwiches
Kentucky Benedictine Tea Sandwiches
Hot Brown Tea Sandwiches

Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie
Mint Ice Cream
Mint Julep Profiteroles
Gluten-free Apple Spice Cupcakes
Rosemary-Citrus Pound Cakes

The weather in California has really been heating up early this year, so be sure to have lots of iced tea and other cold drinks on hand if you celebrate outside.  If you feel up to it, you can bring your tea as a picnic to Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, and watch the Derby on the big screens there!  There will be a hat contest and other festivities!
